Bima Sakhi Scheme: Empowering Women in Rural Areas

The Indian government is implementing various schemes to support all sections of the population, focusing on promoting women’s empowerment. Several initiatives are specifically designed for women.

Recently, the central government introduced a new scheme called “Bima Sakhi,” which aims to benefit women in rural areas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Bima Sakhi Yojana on December 9, 2024, in Panipat, Haryana.

What is the Bima Sakhi Scheme?

The Bima Sakhi Yojana trains women to carry out insurance-related work, enabling them to become competent in this field.

Under this scheme, women will be appointed as Bima Sakhi agents for the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), allowing them to work as LIC agents and sell insurance policies.

This initiative mainly benefits women living in rural areas, where employment opportunities are often limited. The scheme aims to promote self-sufficiency and empower women in these communities.

Will Insurance Partners Be Paid?

Under the Bima Sakhi scheme, women who participate as insurance partners will receive a monthly payment ranging from ₹7,000 to ₹21,000.

Initially, each woman will earn ₹7,000 per month. In the second year, this amount will decrease by ₹1,000 to ₹6,000 per month.

By the third year, the amount will be further reduced by another ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per month. Additionally, women will receive a separate payment of ₹21,000.

Moreover, women who successfully meet their insurance goals will be eligible for a special commission.

In the first phase of the Bima Sakhi scheme, the government aims to employ 35,000 women as insurance agents.

Subsequently, the scheme will expand to benefit 50,000 individuals, with a target of employing 200,000 people within three years.

Women must be between 18 and 50 years old and have passed the 10th standard to register for the Bima Sakhi scheme.
