Free Electricity and Income with PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Escalating electricity costs are a significant concern, particularly for middle-class individuals. The government has introduced a scheme to relieve this financial burden.

To address this issue, the central government has introduced a new scheme called ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.’

This scheme offers the benefit of free electricity and presents an opportunity to generate income by selling surplus electricity.

Under this scheme, the central government provides a subsidy for installing solar power. The subsidy amounts to Rs.30,000 per kilowatt for solar panels installed on a house’s roof.

For instance, the cost of a 3-kilowatt solar rooftop is Rs. 1.5 lakhs, out of which the Centre will bear Rs. 78,000. The remaining amount can be borrowed from banks at low interest rates, making the financial burden more manageable.

The application process is as follows:

  1. Register your name in the Surya Ghar portal, select your state and electricity supply company, and submit your details.
  2. Apply for ‘Rooftop Solar’ after logging in.
  3. Complete the application and await approval from the electricity distribution company (discom).
  4. After receiving permission, install the solar plant from the registered vendors of your discom.
  5. Once installation is complete, submit the plant details on the portal and apply for a net meter.
  6. The authorities will then check and issue a commissioning certificate.
  7. After receiving the report, submit the canceled check and your bank account details on the portal.

Upon completing this process, the subsidy amount will be credited to your account within a month.
