How to Link Credit Card to UPI for Easy Payments


Most people in the market make payments using UPI for their purchases. However, when they don’t have sufficient funds in their accounts, many resort to credit cards. This guide will explain how to link a credit card to UPI and use it effectively.

According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the use of UPI for payments is on the rise in India. In December 2024, 16.73 billion transactions were made through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), indicating a significant increase in digital transactions.

This is an 8% rise compared to the 15.48 billion transactions recorded in November. Digital payments are expected to grow even more, as users can now link their credit cards to UPI.

As UPI gains popularity, credit card users are also leveraging this platform. Here’s how to link your credit card to UPI and enjoy hassle-free transactions.

How to Link a Credit Card to UPI:

  1. Open your UPI app—Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, or any app you prefer.
  2. Navigate to UPI settings in the “UPI” or “Payments” section.
  3. Select “Add Credit Card” or “Link Credit Card.”
  4. Enter your credit card details, including the card number, name, validity, and CVV.
  5. To complete the linking process, You must enter the OTP or password. Once done, your credit card will be successfully linked.

From this point onward, you can use your credit card to make payments via UPI.

Creating a UPI ID: Create a unique UPI ID for transactions after linking your credit card. To set it up, go to the app profile and select “UPI ID.”

You can scan a QR code, enter a phone number, and choose the linked credit card when making payments. Enter your credit card PIN to complete the payment.

Important Points to Remember: NPCI permits only RuPay credit cards to be linked with UPI apps. Visa and MasterCard networks are not yet supported. Twenty-two banks, including SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, offer integration only with RuPay credit cards.
