PMAYG Housing for All Scheme: Chek Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana Details

Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMAY-G), previously known as Indira Awas Yojana (IAY), is a pivotal social welfare scheme implemented by the Indian government.

This initiative aims to provide affordable housing for the rural poor, ensuring everyone has a roof. The scheme aligns with the government’s broader vision of “Housing for All,” with a target to achieve this goal by 2022.

The urban counterpart of this scheme, “Housing for All by 2022,” was introduced in 2015 to cater to the needs of the urban poor.

Indira Awas Yojana was launched in 1985 by then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. It was a flagship program under the Ministry of Rural Development, focused on building houses for the Below Poverty Line (BPL) population in rural areas.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) was introduced to further enhance this initiative, reinforcing the commitment to provide pucca houses with basic amenities for the rural populace.

The PMAY-G scheme is designed for individuals who either do not own a house or live in severely damaged kutcha houses.

The minimum size of the houses under this scheme has been increased from 20 sq. mt. to 25 sq. mt. This reflects the government’s commitment to improving the living standards of rural communities.
