TTE Guidelines for Traveling Without Train Ticket

Indian Railways is often referred to as the country’s lifeline. Every day, millions of people travel on hundreds of trains across India. When it comes to long-distance travel, many prefer train journeys, and some even travel by train as a hobby.

Given the many passengers boarding and alighting from trains daily, Indian Railways has implemented specific rules to prevent inconvenience and losses for passengers and the railway system. One of these rules is the “Compulsory Ticket Purchase” policy.

Wedding Season Rush on Trains: With the wedding season 2024 now underway in India, there is a significant increase in train travel, leading to greater ticket demand.

Many people need help securing conceding help tickets as the travel date approaches. Some board the train after discussing their situation with the station’s Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE).

This may lead observers to think that they could have avoided the hassle of obtaining a ticket if they had spoken with the TTE beforehand. However, what do railway rules state about traveling without a ticket after conversing with the TTE?

Traveling Without a Ticket

Passengers who travel without a ticket, whether due to a lack of time to stand in line or sheer laziness, often board the train while speaking with the TTE.

According to railway regulations, these passengers are subject to fines. Even if they have talked to the TTE, they must pay a fine in addition to the ticket fare. Under Section 138 of the Railway Act, traveling without a ticket is considered an offense.

Therefore, anyone traveling without a ticket must pay the full fare from their starting point to their destination and an additional penalty of Rs. 250.

Securing a Seat: After paying the ticket fare and the TTE penalty while traveling without a ticket, passengers can continue their journey without any worries.

Furthermore, if there is a seat on the train, the TTE may allocate it to you. If the TTE does not offer you a seat, you can inquire about availability.
